ARTHUR SMITH'S PUBLIC LECTURE

Arthur Smith will be performing a one off lecture, offering a radical reconfiguration of Art History, at the Assembly Rooms on Saturday 16th August.

Arthur Smith writes:

“Why do you never hear the sound of laughter in art galleries? Among the interminable Last Suppers of the renaissance why do we perceive only unrelieved pain and religious martyrdom?

The Sistine Chapel is an awesome sight- but laughs? Nothing. Zilch. The Cavalier is laughing but I’m not. Look at Modigliani. Why the long faces?

In this inaugural biannual memorial lecture I will set forth the agenda for a new understanding of art.”

This promises to be one of the highlights of the fringe with Smith, having garnered numerous awards and international recognition for his epoch defining Arturartworks now lending his considerable academic clout to the field of Art History.

ARTURART 2007 AT THE EDINBURGH FRINGE

Venue; Institute Of Zoo Logic.
Dates; 4th - 25th August 2007.
Time; 11am - 5pm.

Winner of the if.comedy panel prize 2007.

The first incarnation of ARTURART was a gallery in an enormous 6 storey town house on Queen Street.

Despite having no talent for painting, drawing, sculpture, pottery, or indeed anything that involves his hands, this new artist, around whom a school had already formed, was set to take his place among the greatest talents of his generation.

Previously known only as a semi-professional comedian, Arthur Smith is finally revealed his first exhibition – a major retrospective of paintings, embroideries, moments trouves and old T shirts.

Visitors to the Institute found art works by other comedians including an installation by Stewart Lee and canvas’ and sculptures by Jo Brand, Simon Munnery, Harry Hill, Tim Key, and many others.

At last art got off with comedy. ARTURART arrived.

ABOUT ARTURART

"ARTURART FEELS AS IF SMITH HAS DISTILLED THE SPIRIT OF THE FRINGE, BOTTLED IT, AND RELEASED IT INTO THIS SPRAWLING SPACE." FIVE STARS. THE MAIL

ARTURART is a counter insurgency group fighting the repression of laughter in Art.

ARTURART takes many forms; galleries, public lectures, public daubings, pranks, and political decoy.

The leader of this brave new movement is Arthur Smith. Formerly known only as a semiprofessional comedian, Smith has undertaken to dedicate his life to the pursuit of comedy through Art. But although Smith is the mastermind and creative powerhouse his cohorts are legion and include a great number of comedian interns; Stewart Lee, Simon Munnery, Tim Vine and Harry Hill to name but a few, as well as a vast network of labourers/painters, translators, and cooks.

ARTURART made it's debut, in gallery form, at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe, where it was awarded the if.comedy panel prize; The biggest prize in international comedy. Backs were slapped and cheques were cashed and ARTURART marched boldly sideways. ARTURART returns to the Fringe in 2008 with a brand new gallery and a special one off lecture on ARTURART History. Neither are to be missed.

None of this would be possible of course without the continued support of our enigmatic patron, Mr G. And ARTURART, in all it's forms, is produced by Zoo Logic.
